Teton Pass, WY, Buried After Huge Avalanche During Mitigation Work, Closing Highway Through Tuesday

Teton Pass near Jackson Hole, Wyoming, remained closed Monday after a large avalanche poured over Wyoming Highway 22 during early-morning mitigation work, burying the high-mountain corridor under feet of snow. Some local observers have described the avalanche as the biggest to impact the road in recent memory, according to local news outlet Buckrail.

WYDOT crews closed the pass around 3 a.m. Monday to carry out routine avalanche control in the Glory Bowl slide path, a steep and historically active zone directly above the highway. During that mission, state crews intentionally released a large slab that broke deeper and wider than expected, sending heavy debris across both lanes.

Images shared by WYDOT showed the road completely inundated, with snow piled dozens of feet high in places. WYDOT told local news that the volume of debris has required extensive cleanup and heavy equipment, and that the depth and density of the pile will keep crews working through Tuesday.

WYDOT estimated the road will remain closed until between noon and 2 p.m. on Tuesday, depending on weather and progress on the ground. No injuries were reported.

Teton Pass is a key connector between Jackson Hole and communities in eastern Idaho, rising to more than 8,400 feet and cutting directly beneath several large avalanche paths. Winter storms and high winds have hammered the Tetons in recent days, creating what forecasters have called “very dangerous” avalanche conditions and prompting aggressive mitigation in many mountain corridors. Transportation officials have urged travelers to plan alternate routes, monitor WYDOT updates, and prepare for continued winter impacts across the region.
