Search Suspended for Snowbiker Missing Following Avalanche in the Snake Creek Area, Utah, Yesterday

At approximately 4:30 p.m. on February 22, the Wasatch County 911 Center received a report of an avalanche in the Snake Creek area west of Midway, Utah, according to a press release from the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office. One adult male snowmobiler was reported buried in the avalanche. Emergency crews responded to the area; however, the slide was described as large, and unstable snow conditions prevented rescuers from remaining in the debris field.

Due to ongoing avalanche hazard, search operations were suspended for the night. Avalanche control explosives are planned to secure the area before search efforts resume. Search operations are expected to continue today, February 23. No additional information is available at this time, and no reports is yet available on the Utah Avalanche Center website.

Media and the public are asked to avoid the Snake Creek area, including access via Pine Canyon Road, during ongoing search and avalanche mitigation operations to ensure the safety of personnel and prevent interference with response efforts.

This is the second reported avalanche involving a buried individual in the Snake Creek drainage within the past week. The Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office urges all backcountry recreationists to check current avalanche forecasts and conditions through the Utah Avalanche Center before entering the backcountry. Avalanche danger can change rapidly, and recent storm cycles have created hazardous conditions in many areas of the Wasatch Mountains.

The Utah Avalanche Center rated the avalanche danger as ‘considerable’ yesterday, warning, “…today is NOT the day to be in steep avalanche terrain. That means staying off of—and out from under—slopes steeper than 30 degrees. Large, destructive, and potentially deadly slab avalanches are likely. Blue skies and fresh powder can make it feel like a perfect day, but when those line up with dangerous avalanche conditions and busy backcountry traffic, that’s often when we see serious accidents. Choose low-angle terrain. Spread out. Speak up within your group. Let’s work together to make sure everyone comes home.”

Wasatch County Search and Rescue, Wasatch County Fire District, Wasatch County Sheriff’s deputies, AirMed, the Utah Department of Public Safety Aero Bureau, and the Utah Department of Natural Resources all assisted in this response. The Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office is mindful of the loved ones awaiting information and appreciates the efforts of all personnel involved in this ongoing incident.

The tragedy marks the third avalanche fatality in Utah this season, and the 19th in the United States. There have also been three fatalities in Canada.
