New Details Emerge from Touring Partner in Avalanche Death of Pro Splitboarder Stratton Matteson Near Joffre Peak, BC

Newly released firsthand testimony has clarified the tragic events surrounding the death of 28-year-old professional splitboarder Stratton Matteson, who was killed in a large avalanche near Joffre Peak on February 24, 2026. While initial reports from the RCMP and Avalanche Canada identified Matteson as a “lone snowboarder,” his touring partner, Ryan Morrison, has come forward to share a harrowing account of the accident and a desperate, ultimately thwarted rescue attempt.

The pair had headed toward the Anniversary Glacier in the Nlháxten/Cerise Creek Conservancy following a clear, cold night, targeting a steep panel of terrain to the right of the glacier. Morrison recalled in a social media post that Matteson dropped into the line first and radioed from the bottom to report excellent conditions. However, when Morrison followed with a line directly adjacent to Matteson’s tracks, the entire slope avalanched. Morrison managed to arrest his own fall by digging in his heels, but he watched as the slide swept over the area where Matteson was waiting.

Despite suffering a concussion and physical injuries, Morrison immediately transitioned into a beacon search. His efforts were soon interrupted by “hang fire,” as Morrison described, or unstable snow remaining above the crown which began to release secondary slides onto his position. Fearing he would be buried himself, a concussed Morrison was forced to retreat and seek professional help. Pemberton Search and Rescue later located Matteson’s body that afternoon, confirming he had not survived the Size 3.5 slide. The avalanche, which featured a crown up to 80 inches deep, ran for nearly a mile downslope, packing enough force to destroy small buildings.

Originally from Bend, Oregon, Matteson was a celebrated figure in the backcountry community, known for a spirit that friends say was as vast as the mountains he rode. Since the accident, his family has established the Stratton Matteson Legacy to preserve his memory and support the community he loved. Morrison, who described Matteson as “one of the best people” he had ever ridden with, has announced a personal pause from backcountry travel as he processes the loss. This tragedy marks the fourth avalanche fatality in British Columbia this season, followed by a fifth less than a week later, punctuating a particularly deadly week in the province’s mountains.
