Friends of CAIC Launches Spring Gear Giveaway to Raise $30,000 for Avalanche Safety

Friends of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center has launched its annual Spring Gear Giveaway, running through April 1, with a goal of raising $30,000 to fund avalanche forecasting and education across Colorado.

The campaign offers donors a chance to win a share of 24 prizes valued at more than $16,000 in backcountry gear and experiences. Every $20 donation earns participants one entry to win gear of their choice. Donors select which prizes they want to enter for at the time of donation, allowing them to target specific items from the prize pool.

The timing of the campaign reflects the continued urgency of avalanche safety in a state that carries an outsized share of the nation’s risk. Colorado leads the nation in avalanche accidents and deaths, with avalanches representing the most deadly weather-related natural hazard in the state on an annual basis, averaging about six deaths per year and many more non-fatal injuries.

Friends of CAIC, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, has served as the primary fundraising arm of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center since its founding in 2005. Last season, the organization gave $310,500 directly to CAIC forecasting operations and visited 232 trailheads through its Trailhead Outreach Program, engaging 8,809 backcountry users across the state. It also maintained avalanche awareness signage at more than 200 trailheads, replacing or installing 99 new signs.

Since 2014, the organization has invested just over $4.4 million into avalanche safety, funding forecast infrastructure, public education programs, web and mobile application development, and trailhead outreach statewide.

The Spring Gear Giveaway is one of the organization’s primary annual fundraising drives, bridging the gap between the end of winter and next season’s operational needs. Proceeds support goals for the 2025–26 season that include providing $350,000 in direct financial support to CAIC and educating more than 7,000 people across Colorado through the Trailhead Outreach Program.

Donations can be made and entries submitted through the Friends of CAIC website. The campaign closes April 1.
