Bormio is the most famous ski resort in Lombardy and one of the most popular in Italy. It is part of the large Alta Valtellina ski region and is known not only for its excellent skiing but also for its rich sporting history. The resort hosted the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in 1985 and 2005, and today it regularly stages FIS World Cup races.
The Bormio 2000 ski area lies on the slopes of Cima Bianca (3,012 m) and offers about 50 km of well-groomed pistes. It is home to the legendary Stelvio downhill course, famous for hosting top-level international competitions.
One of the highlights of the resort is an 8 km run with a vertical drop of about 1,700 meters, descending from the summit all the way to the town. For those who want to keep skiing after sunset, night skiing is available twice a week on illuminated slopes.
