“We are deeply saddened to report a snowmobile avalanche fatality today.  The accident occurred north of the Keg Springs trailhead in the Centennial Mountains near Island Park. The GNFAC will visit the site tomorrow.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim during this tragic time.”

The slide occurred around 2 p.m. in the Keg Springs area of Carrot Canyon, according to preliminary data from the GNFAC. The accident involved a group of four riders visiting from the Midwest. Three riders were caught and carried by the avalanche; two were partially buried and survived, while one was completely buried and did not.

Fremont County Sheriff Bart Quayle told East Idaho News his department assisted Clark County in the rescue efforts. “If there is a silver lining in such a tragedy, it’s that three others survived,” Quayle said. “Regardless, our deepest condolences go out to the family of the deceased.”

The avalanche was classified as a soft slab (SS) on an east-facing slope at roughly 8,000 feet. It measured a destructive size of D2—strong enough to bury or destroy a vehicle—and was triggered unintentionally by a snowmobile on a buried weak layer.

Rescue teams from Fremont, Madison, and Gallatin counties responded to multiple incidents across the region on Sunday, including two additional snowmobile rescues near the Two Top and Hotel Creek areas. All riders in those incidents made it home safely, according to authorities.

The GNFAC reported considerable avalanche danger on Sunday and Monday for the Island Park, West Yellowstone, Big Sky, Cooke City, and southern Bozeman areas, warning, “Recent snow overloaded weak layers that formed in January making it easy to trigger large avalanches which break wide and up to 2-3’ deep, and can be triggered from lower angle terrain below steep slopes. Avoid crossing on and underneath slopes steeper than 30 degrees.”

Forecasters will visit the Carrot Canyon site today to conduct an investigation and gather further information.

Avalanche experts are urging backcountry riders to avoid slopes steeper than 30 degrees and any terrain directly below them. “Persistent weak layers remain a serious problem,” GNFAC forecasters said in their daily report. “Even a single rider can trigger a large avalanche right now.”

The tragedy marks the first avalanche fatality in Idaho since December 2024. It is the 19th in the United States this season. There have also been three fatalities in Canada.
