Sister of Italian SkiMo Athlete Dies in Avalanche at Swiss-Italian Border

Two people died after being overwhelmed by an avalanche on the southwest side of Piz Tea Fondada—also known as Monte Cornaccia in Italian—in the territory of Valdidentro, in Valtellina. The slide killed a young ski instructor and a local mountaineer while on a backcountry tour in high-altitude terrain near Bormio on the Swiss-Italian border. A third member of the party survived unharmed.

The victims were identified as Marika Mascherona, 28, and Alberto De Maron, 26. Mascherona is the sister of national SkiMo athlete Katia Mascherona. Marika Mascherona herself was a former Europa Cup slalom skier and worked as a coach for youth athletes in Bormio. She was on a ski tour with De Maron on the mountain’s southwest face when the avalanche struck late in the morning around 10:30.

According to emergency services, the alarm was raised shortly after 10:30 a.m. by the Alpine emergency dispatch centre. The avalanche struck at around 2,900 metres on the southwest side of Piz Tea Fondada/Monte Cornaccia, not far from the summit, and ran for more than 300 meters downslope. The Alpine Rescue, the Sondrio fire brigade and two rescue helicopters that took off from Sondrio and Bergamo intervened.

Rescue operations involved around 15 technicians from the Bormio and Valfurva stations of the Corpo Nazionale Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico (CNSAS), alongside the Alpine Rescue unit of the Guardia di Finanza and local firefighters. Two helicopters from the regional emergency agency AREU, based in Sondrio and Bergamo, were deployed. Rescuers worked with transceivers, probes and avalanche dog units to rule out the presence of other people buried in the slide. Despite their efforts, the two ski tourers were found without signs of life. The third member of the party was assessed at the scene and did not require hospitalisation. Operations concluded in the early afternoon.

In a statement, the Federazione Italiana Sport Invernali (FISI) described the deaths as “a huge tragedy” for the winter sports community. FISI President Flavio Roda and the federal council expressed their condolences to the family “in these terrible hours of suffering.”

Piz Tea Fondada/Monte Cornaccia is a 3,144-meter (10,315-foot) peak that rises above Val Cancano in the municipality of Valdidentro, a side valley of Valtellina near the well-known resort town of Bormio in Lombardy. The area is popular with ski mountaineers for its wide, open slopes and relatively accessible high-altitude terrain, but its broad southwest-facing aspects can become particularly unstable under certain snow and temperature conditions.

Rescuers said they were forced to operate in complex conditions, both because of the steep, exposed terrain and the instability of the snowpack, which carried the risk of further avalanches. The accident comes during what authorities describe as a delicate period for mountain safety. Heavy snowfall in recent weeks, combined with fluctuating temperatures, has heightened the risk of both spontaneous avalanches and slides triggered by skiers.

CNASA renewed their appeal for caution, urging backcountry users to consult official avalanche bulletins before setting out and to carry standard self-rescue equipment, including a transceiver, probe and shovel.

The recent death takes the Italian avalanche death toll to 30 for the hydrological year.
