An avalanche swept away a group of 13 ski tourists Wednesday morning, March 4, near Trollfjordvatnet in northern Norway, leaving one person with minor injuries and briefly burying two members of the group for about 15 minutes, according to the Norwegian Avalanche Association (Varsom).

The incident occurred near Trollfjordvatnet, a remote mountain area in Vesterålen known for steep terrain and popular ski touring routes. The lake sits close to the dramatic Trollfjord, a narrow fjord famous for its towering alpine walls.
The region lies well above the Arctic Circle, about 68.3° north latitude, roughly 180 miles (290 kilometers) north of the Arctic Circle. Despite the remote setting, it has become a growing destination for international ski tourists seeking Arctic ski mountaineering terrain.
Police first reported the incident at 12:55 p.m. local time after receiving an emergency call from the group. According to operations manager Thomas Jarnæs Coe, all 13 members of the group were caught in the avalanche, with two of them temporarily buried. “One person sustained minor injuries,” Coe said. “The group was airlifted from the mountain, and the injured person was treated on-site by a doctor from the rescue helicopter before being transported to hospital.”
All members were flown from the mountain to Helle Airport, located in the nearby Lofoten archipelago. The helicopter involved was the SAR Queen, Norway’s modern search-and-rescue helicopter used for major emergencies in remote areas. Rescuers reported that conditions at the site were good, allowing the helicopter to land nearby and evacuate the group.
The group involved was part of a guided trip run by Norwegian adventure operator SeilNorge, which organizes ski-and-sail expeditions in northern Norway. In a statement posted on Facebook, the company said the incident was something “none of us ever wish to encounter on a trip,” confirming that 13 people were caught in the avalanche but were quickly accounted for by rescuers.

The company said its immediate priority was caring for guests and staff while cooperating with rescue teams and local authorities. “For many years, SeilNorge has organized Ski & Sail trips in the mountains of Northern Norway,” the company wrote. “We work continuously with safety procedures, risk assessments and routines for travelling in the winter mountains. However, when travelling in this type of terrain there is always an inherent risk, even with thorough planning, experienced guides and careful evaluations.”
SeilNorge added that it will conduct a thorough review of the incident, working with professional experts and preparing a formal report to share lessons learned with the wider mountain community. “We are grateful for the efforts of the rescue teams and everyone who contributed to the response,” the company said. “Most of all, we are grateful that the outcome was as good as it was.”
The avalanche occurred during a period of elevated avalanche danger across northern Norway. The national avalanche warning service Varsom had issued a “considerable” avalanche danger rating (Level 3 of 5) for Vesterålen, Lofoten, Ofoten, and Sør-Troms on Wednesday.
The mountains surrounding Trollfjord have become increasingly popular for Arctic ski touring, offering steep couloirs that plunge directly toward the sea. But the same terrain that attracts skiers also makes rescue operations challenging. Cell phone reception in the area is limited or nonexistent, and weather conditions can change rapidly.
The Norwegian Avalanche Association emphasized that despite the dramatic incident, the group was extremely fortunate that injuries were minor and that rescuers were able to reach the site quickly. With warming temperatures and recent snowfall affecting stability across northern Scandinavia, avalanche forecasters continue to urge extreme caution for backcountry travelers in the region.
