An avalanche on Lincoln Mountain at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, California, early Friday morning injured two members of the Mammoth Mountain Ski Patrol during routine avalanche mitigation work.
The slide occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m., before the resort opened for operations, according to a Mammoth Mountain social post. Both patrollers were quickly located and transported to Mammoth Hospital. One sustained serious injuries and is being transferred out of the area for specialized care; the other is being evaluated for possible broken bones.

Mammoth Mountain has received more than five feet of new snow since December 23, creating elevated avalanche hazards across the Eastern Sierra. The resort announced it will remain closed for the rest of Friday while ski patrol conducts further mitigation and safety assessments.
In a public message, Mammoth Mountain Ski Patrol asked the community to refrain from spreading unverified information. “We are fully aware that there was an avalanche this morning on Lincoln Mountain,” the patrol wrote. “Two members of the MMSP were involved. As soon as we have factual information, we will post it. We are really not interested in what you may have heard from a friend. This is not a place for rumors and gossip.”

Friday’s incident echoes a similar tragedy at Mammoth Mountain in February 2025, when a veteran patroller died following an inbounds avalanche during mitigation work on the same peak.
As of Friday afternoon, the condition of the injured patrollers has not been publicly updated. Visitors are urged to respect closures and heed safety directives as the resort continues to manage the aftermath of heavy snowfall and persistent avalanche danger. The resort summit has seen 54″ of fresh snow in the last two days and 67″ in the previous three, after a slow start to the season, bringing the season total to 107″.
The Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center warns that, “Very dangerous avalanche conditions persist as heavy snowfall and strong southwest winds continue into the afternoon. Even if things ease up later today, natural and human-triggered avalanches will remain likely. Give it time, give it space, and avoid being on or under slopes steeper than about 30 degrees.”
