5 Confirmed Dead in Italian Avalanche as Bodies of Missing Father and Daughter Found

The search for the two missing people from Saturday’s avalanche in the Ortler Massif in Italy continued on Sunday morning, November 2. 25 search and rescue workers, as well as a canine unit, were deployed to the area in the early morning hours. Sadly, the missing father and his 17-year-old daughter were found deceased by the mountain rescue teams.

Three groups of a total of seven alpinists were swept away by an avalanche beneath the Vertain peak, near the resort village of Sulden (Solda) in South Tyrol on Saturday, November 1. The three groups consisted of a group of three, which was completely buried, while the second and third groups each consisted of two hikers. One of the duos was alerted by the shouts of the other duo about the incoming avalanche and managed to escape the brunt of the impact and was able to alert authorities, while the other two were swept away. The three climbers from the first group, two men and a woman between the ages of 30 and 50, were found dead at the scene, while the two others from the second group could not be found before nightfall on Saturday.

The avalanche occurred around 3:50 p.m. in the Ortler massif, one of South Tyrol’s most iconic mountain ranges, at an altitude of around 3,200 meters (10,500 feet). The groups were going along a chute along the north face when the avalanche struck. Pictures from the Italian mountain rescue CNSAS show an icy chute which the three groups had traversed with ice picks and crampons. The father and daughter duo had apparently been carried into the lower part of the avalanche chute. Rescue operations were made particularly complicated by the weather, with the fog hampering search and rescue efforts.

Emergency services were quickly deployed after the alarm was raised. Volunteer firefighters and mountain rescue teams from Sulden responded alongside officers from the Guardia di Finanza Alpine Rescue in Schlanders, as well as rescue workers from nearby rescue stations. Two emergency helicopters, Pelikan 1 and Pelikan 3, assisted in the rescue and recovery efforts. Pelikan 1 retrieved the bodies of the three deceased and flew them to the nearby hospital, while Pelikan 3 continued operating at the avalanche site late into the evening.

Helicopters and search teams returned on Sunday morning and located the 17-year-old fairly quickly, who was covered by only a thin layer of snow. She had fallen around 200 meters (650 feet) down steep mountain face while her father’s body was found in a crevasse. Helicopters were unable to return for several hours due to inclement weather. Just before 1 p.m., a successful flight could be made during a brief break in the weather to retrieve the rescue teams and the victims’ bodies. All five victims have been identified as German nationals.

The area has experienced recent snowfalls and strong winds, which have increased the risk of wind slab avalanches. CNSAS South Tyrol has advised climbers to exercise extreme caution when setting out into high alpine regions.
