Italian Freerider Dies After Avalanche Carries Him Into Crevasse in the Italian Dolomites

[Updated December 28, 7:30 p.m. CET]

A 31-year-old freerider from Rome died in hospital after being rescued with serious injuries late Saturday afternoon, December 27. The victim, identified as Eduardo Conti, was  swept into a deep crevasse by an avalanche on Marmolada, one of the Italian Dolomites’ most complex and glaciated massifs.

According to a statement released by the Trentino Alpine and Speleological Rescue (CNSAS), the man was skiing at an altitude of approximately 2,700 meters (8,860 feet) below Punta Rocca when the avalanche reportedly released, carrying him over a rock band and into one of the area’s numerous crevasses.

The alarm was raised at 1:45 p.m. when the skier’s companions called Italian emergency services after losing contact with him for around half an hour. Emergency services immediately contacted the Alta Fassa station of CNSAS and dispatched a rescue helicopter to the scene. “During an initial overflight, the helicopter crew immediately identified an avalanche deposit unloading into a crevasse,” CNSAS Trentino stated in its press release.

Given the complexity of the terrain and the high likelihood that the victim had been buried or trapped below the surface, two avalanche canine units were flown to the site; one from CNSAS Trentino’s helicopter base and another from the Moena State Police. At the same time, rescue technicians from the Alta Fassa station were airlifted to altitude and began systematic search operations. The afternoon-long rescue effort focused both on the avalanche debris and the crevasse itself. In total, 10 rescuers were involved on the ground—eight from Alta Fassa and two from the Moena station—in addition to the avalanche dog teams.

After several hours of searching, rescuers located the skier deep inside the crevasse, at what CNSAS described as “an extremely deep point.” A medical team was then flown in by helicopter, while rescuers carried out a technically demanding extraction in challenging alpine conditions. The operation concluded at approximately 5:30 p.m., when the injured freerider was evacuated by helicopter to the landing field in Canazei, where he was intubated, before being flown onward to Santa Chiara Hospital in Trento. CNSAS reports that the 31-year-old man is in serious condition. It was confirmed on Sunday, December 28, that Conti had succumbed to his injuries.

The Marmolada region saw 15 centimeters (6 inches) of snowfall on Christmas Day, December 25. The avalanche danger for the region was level 1 of 5 (“low”), however, the Italian avalanche service center points out that “Avalanches can in isolated cases penetrate deep layers and reach medium size. Such avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular on extremely steep shady slopes above approximately 2,000 m. The older wind slabs can still in isolated cases be released by a single winter sport participant, but they will be small in most cases. Apart from the danger of being buried, restraint should be exercised as well in view of the danger of avalanches sweeping people along and giving rise to falls, especially at elevated altitudes.” This incident shows that dangerous avalanches can still strike in low-risk conditions.
