Murphy was conducting avalanche mitigation efforts with a colleague when the slide occurred around 11:30 a.m. The area had been closed to the public following a storm that dumped approximately six feet of snow on the resort in 36 hours.

While Murphy’s patrol partner was uninjured, she suffered serious injuries and was initially transported to Mammoth Hospital before being airlifted for advanced care. Despite efforts to save her, Murphy succumbed to her injuries on Saturday, February 22.

The avalanche prompted Mammoth Mountain to temporarily shut down operations.

On average, more than 20 people die annually in avalanches in the United States, with most victims being backcountry skiers and snowmobilers. This tragic fatality is the 14th this season in the US, and the 15th in North America.

Mammoth Mountain officials expressed their condolences, stating, “Our hearts are with her family and our community as we navigate this tragedy together.” The resort plans to share information about memorial services and fundraising programs in the coming days.
