[PHOTOS] Airbag Saves Skier After 1,600-Foot Avalanche Ride Over Cliffs and Through Trees Near Kicking Horse Resort, BC




A skier suffered multiple major injuries after triggering a large avalanche just outside the boundary of Kicking Horse Mountain Resort in Golden, British Columbia, on Saturday, January 11. The incident occurred around 12:40 p.m. when a group ventured into a notoriously complex area known as Terminator 2.5.

Golden and Area Search and Rescue (GADSAR) reported that one skier was caught in the size 2.5 avalanche, which swept them approximately 1,600 feet (500 meters) over cliff bands and through small trees. Despite the treacherous terrain, the skier managed to deploy their avalanche airbag and remain on the surface of the slide.

“One member of the party went for approximately 500m ride over cliff bands and through small trees resulting in multiple major injuries but was able to deploy their airbag and remain on the surface.”

GADSAR quickly mobilized a response team, with one member departing from the resort while two others staged at the Golden Airport. Alpine Helicopters assisted in the rescue operation, inserting two GADSAR members via helicopter sling to reach the injured skier.

After stabilizing and packaging the patient, rescuers transported them back to Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. The injured skier was transferred to BC Emergency Health Services for further medical care.



The avalanche forecast rating for the day was ‘moderate,’ with avalanche.ca warning, “Keep an eye on changing conditions. Small wind slabs may have formed near ridge crests. Use extra caution in shallow snowpack areas where triggering avalanches is more likely.”

Adjacent Kicking Horse Mountain Resort has seen 100″ of snow so far this season and has a 44″ base.
