Snowmobiler Killed by Avalanche in Utah’s Monte Cristo Snowmobile Area

The victim, whose identity remains undisclosed pending family notification, was snowmobiling with a companion. Unable to locate his friend, the surviving rider alerted authorities.

Rich County Search and Rescue teams were dispatched at 3:03 p.m., joined by Cache County, Weber County, Life Flight, and the Utah Department of Public Safety teams. The operation also saw the deployment of specialized resources such as a Powder Mountain K-9 unit and a Black Hawk helicopter.

Rescuers faced challenging conditions, with deep snow hampering their efforts. The victim was found at 6:21 p.m., nearly four hours after the initial call.

The avalanche risk was rated as ‘considerable’ at the time.

“The avalanche danger is CONSIDERABLE on all mid- and upper-elevation slopes, where human-triggered avalanches are likely to fail on a layer of weak, faceted snow, now buried beneath the new snow and recent wind drifts. These avalanches could be 1–3 feet deep and may be larger if they involve the facets near the ground.

Strong winds have created wind drifts at mid and upper elevations, which can be avoided by staying on lower-angle slopes. Avoid being near or under large cornices, as they may break further than expected and trigger avalanches below.

At low elevations, avalanche danger is MODERATE due to the possibility of wet snow avalanches. This risk will increase throughout the day and into tomorrow as temperatures rise and remain above freezing. Pay attention to changing conditions; if the snow becomes wet, unsupportable, and unstable, it’s time to gain elevation.

– Utah Avalanche Center forecast for Monday, February 3

Authorities are expected to release more details as the investigation into this tragic event continues.

This incident marks the first avalanche fatality in Utah for 2025 and the third for the 2024-2025 winter season. There have been seven avalanche related fatalities in the United States this season.
