Federal Cuts Threaten Sierra Avalanche Center’s Forecasting Operations

The Sierra Avalanche Center (SAC), responsible for avalanche forecasting in the Tahoe region, faces an imminent reduction in its forecasting capabilities due to federal staffing cuts. The U.S. Forest Service has announced plans to lay off one of SAC’s three avalanche forecasters as early as next week, a decision that could severely impact public safety during the heart of winter.

Deep Dive: Forest Service Budget Challenges Threaten Avalanche Center Operations Nationwide

If the layoff proceeds, SAC will be forced to reduce its daily avalanche forecasts from seven days a week to just four. This cutback jeopardizes the safety of over 200,000 backcountry users who rely on SAC’s forecasts annually to navigate avalanche-prone terrain. Local search-and-rescue teams and ski patrols also depend on these forecasts for safe operations.

“What is happening?

As part of the federal government’s ongoing staff cuts, the U.S. Forest Service may lay off one of the three Sierra Avalanche Center forecasters as soon as next week.

If that happens, the Sierra Avalanche Center (SAC) would be forced to cut its daily avalanche forecast, and only issue 4 forecasts per week instead of 7, due to coverage and operational safety.”

The move has sparked widespread concern among the backcountry community and local officials. Despite SAC’s unique funding model—where 75% of forecasters’ salaries are covered by a nonprofit—the layoff would require the federal government to reimburse the nonprofit for already allocated funds, negating any fiscal benefit.

Advocates urge the public to contact Congress members, such as Kevin Kiley in California or Mark Amodei in Nevada, to demand that avalanche forecasters be deemed essential and exempt from these cuts. Community support is critical to maintaining SAC’s vital role in public safety.

The Sierra Avalanche Center (SAC) is a critical resource for backcountry safety in the Lake Tahoe region. Operating as a public-private partnership between the U.S. Forest Service and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, SAC provides daily avalanche forecasts, snowpack assessments, and weather observations. Three full-time, seasonal avalanche forecasters gather data and issue advisories, which are relied upon by over 200,000 individuals annually, including backcountry users, local sheriffs’ departments, and ski patrols. SAC’s mission focuses on informing and educating the public about backcountry avalanche conditions, offering various educational programs and events to support winter recreation safety. To maintain its vital operations, the center’s funding model combines federal support with extensive community fundraising efforts, including popular “Ski Day” events and private donations.
