2 British Tourists Die in Massive Avalanche That Killed 3 in Val d’Isère, France

Three skiers are dead following a large avalanche that struck the ski area of Val d’Isère on Friday, February 13, in France’s Savoie region. According to CRS Alpes, the slide occurred around 11:30 a.m. in an off-piste sector of the resort. Rescue teams completed their search shortly before 2 p.m., with body recovery operations continuing into the early afternoon.

Two of the victims, both British nationals, were part of a group of four skiers accompanied by a professional instructor. All members of the group were equipped with avalanche safety gear, including transceivers, shovels, and probes, according to resort officials. Alcohol and narcotics tests were conducted on the instructor and came back negative, Albertville public prosecutor Benoît Bachelet confirmed.

The third victim, a French national, was skiing separately and was also equipped with safety equipment. One additional person sustained minor injuries.

Rescuers reported that the victims were caught in a series of large-scale cascading avalanche flows that swept into a creek in a valley below. The third victim was found all the way in the creek bed.

Cédric Bonnevie, director of piste operations in Val d’Isère, explained at a press conference that the guided group was positioned low on the slope and may not have seen the avalanche coming. “They would not have, it seems, seen the avalanche come because they were all the way at the bottom of the slope,” Bonnevie said.

The third victim was located higher on the slope. Whether that skier triggered the slide, whether it was triggered by others, or whether it released naturally remains unknown “We can’t know,” Bonnevie added.

An investigation for manslaughter has been opened by the Albertville prosecutor’s office and assigned to CRS Alpes.

The avalanche was captured on video by a witness, Antoine Martignon, who told France 3 Alpes that he shared the footage with rescuers to assist their response. Thanks to these eyewitnesses, search and rescue services were alerted immediately. The avalanche video can be seen in French newspaper France 3.

The tragedy comes amid elevated avalanche danger across the Northern Alps. Meteo France rated the avalanche risk at 4 out of 5, classified as “strong,” across the Vanoise massif and much of the region. The Savoie department had been placed on red avalanche alert the day prior and stressed that “the Prefect of Savoie formally advises against off-piste activities, ski touring and snowshoeing.”

The resort reiterated that skiers are advised to remain within marked and secured areas of the ski domain during such conditions. Off-piste areas are not subject to avalanche control in European resorts, unless slides could impact groomed runs.

With significant recent snowfall and strong winds forming unstable wind slabs, authorities stressed that this was not the time to venture into uncontrolled terrain.
