The Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) is urging backcountry travelers to make avalanche safety a central part of their Presidents Day weekend plans. Avalanche danger is expected to reach the highest levels seen so far this month during a weekend that is historically prone to avalanche accidents.

Avalanche danger is CONSIDERABLE (Level 3 of 5) across Colorado’s Northern and Central mountains, and is expected to remain elevated through the weekend. In many areas, backcountry travelers can easily trigger avalanches in new storm snow, and some avalanches may break into deeper buried weak layers. An additional round of snow Friday night will increase avalanche danger in the Southern Mountains as the holiday weekend continues.
Areas that receive the most snow on Thursday and Friday are likely to be the most dangerous on Saturday and Sunday. Backcountry travelers are urged to check the avalanche forecast frequently and adjust plans as conditions evolve.
CAIC forecasters say the combination of fresh snow, improving weather and increased backcountry traffic can quickly elevate the risk of accidents. Historically, February is the deadliest month for avalanches in Colorado. Over the last decade, 10 avalanche accidents have killed a total of 13 people around Presidents Day weekend. “Holiday weekends bring more people into the backcountry at the same time avalanche danger is rising,” said CAIC Director Ethan Greene. “Plan ahead, check the forecast, and make sure everyone in your group has the training and rescue equipment needed to enjoy the weekend and get home safely.”
Backcountry travelers are encouraged to:
Check the daily avalanche forecast at Colorado.gov/avalanche before heading out
Avoid avalanche-prone terrain when danger is elevated
Carry avalanche rescue equipment (transceiver, probe, shovel) and know how to use it
