Two guests at Whistler Blackcomb narrowly avoided injury in an inbounds avalanche on February 2. The incident took place in the Saudan Couloir, an ‘experts-only’ run, on Blackcomb Mountain known for its steep pitch and demanding terrain. This avalanche highlights the persistent risks present in steep, high-alpine terrain even within resort boundaries.
At approximately 12:11 p.m., Blackcomb Ski Patrol received a call and responded immediately to the area. The two guests involved were uninjured, and the area was cleared by approximately 1:08 p.m., highlighting the professional and timely response of mountain services.
In a statement released by the resort, a spokesperson said, “Whistler Blackcomb places the highest value on the safety of our guests and employees. Ski Patrol regularly performs avalanche mitigation work, monitors snow conditions and weather forecasts, and evaluates terrain as conditions change.”
This incident is the third notable in-bounds avalanche at the resort this season. In mid-January, two separate avalanches occurred on the same day in the Bushrat and Sapphire Bowl areas. Fortunately, the six people involved in these avalanches had no injuries as well.
While Whistler Blackcomb continues its daily mitigation efforts, this week’s close call serves as a reminder that the mountain’s snowpack often remains unpredictable. So whether you are backcountry skiing or delving into some of the gnarlier terrain in-bounds, checking the daily weather and avalanche reports at the resort remains the best way to remain safe on the slopes.
