A fatal avalanche occurred at Jikepulin Ski Resort in the Altai Mountains of Northwest China, near the Mongolian and Kazakhstani borders. China Daily reported that the incident happened outside of a designated ski trail early in the afternoon and resulted in one person buried and killed. According to OpenSnow, Jikepulin Ski Resort has already received 117 inches of snow this season, with 20 inches falling in the last five days. A quick look at CalTopo reveals a few pockets of in-bounds avalanche terrain, and huge, steep slopes to the Northwest of the ski area. In January 2024, ten days of continuous snowfall in the region brought a widespread, major avalanche problem, burying 31 miles of road up to 23 feet deep. The road closures trapped more than 1,000 people in the village of Hemu, near Jikepulin Ski Resort.
