Michael Henry, 30, Tampa, FL, Blackbird Mountain Guide

Nicole Chu, 42, South Lake Tahoe, CA, Blackbird Mountain Guide

Elizabeth Clabaugh, 52, Boise Idahoe

Danielle Keatley 44, Soda Springs, CA

Katherine Vitt, Greenbay, CA

Moon expressed her condolences to the victims’ families and friends. “While we wish we could have saved them all, we are grateful we can bring them home,” she said during the press conference.

The extraction of the victims was a lengthy and difficult mission, as records by Lt Dennis Haack of the Nevada Sheriff’s Office and flight paramedic Chad Wayland highlighted. Due to inclement weather, avalanche mitigation work was delayed. It took until Friday for all work to be completed before crews could safely extract the bodies. According to Lt. Haack, five of the bodies were recovered on Friday while the remaining were airlifted out on Saturday morning. The ninth body was found close to the remaining group.

Sheriff Moon did not speculate on the reasons the group chose the way out of the valley but confirmed that according to current information by the surviving members, it was decided to leave early to avoid getting caught in an avalanche. Investigation into the exact causes and reasons behind the incident are ongoing. The avalanche is the deadliest in California’s modern state history.
