One person was killed in an avalanche in Utah’s Wasatch backcountry on Wednesday, February 18, marking the first fatal avalanche of the 2025-26 winter in the state. The slide occurred in terrain between Snake Creek and Ant Knolls, an area east of the Cottonwood Canyons, officials said. Initial information indicates two people were snowmobiling when the avalanche was triggered Wednesday afternoon, Utah Avalanche Center forecaster Greg Gagne told KSL News.

A father and son were snowmobiling when the avalanche occurred and the father was buried, according to the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office. “The juvenile male, using an avalanche beacon, located and dug his father out of the snow,” the sheriff’s office said. “Despite his efforts, the adult male was deceased.”
The Utah Avalanche Center wrote in a publicly available statement regarding the slide:
“We are deeply saddened to report an avalanche fatality on Wednesday, February 18th in the area between Snake Creek and Ant Knolls. We are actively working with the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office to gather details. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. UAC forecasters are visiting the accident site today.”
The identity of the victim was not released and no additional information about the second person involved was immediately available. The fatal avalanche comes after a powerful storm cycle that delivered heavy snowfall across Utah’s mountains. Resorts in the Cottonwood Canyons reported receiving more than 3 feet of new snow in recent days, with totals reaching roughly 4 feet at Alta Ski Area.
The Utah Avalanche Center had already issued an avalanche warning covering much of the Wasatch Range, citing high (Level 4 of 5) danger due to heavy new snow falling on weak underlying layers in the snowpack. The warning remains in effect through at least Friday morning, with the possibility of continued alerts depending on conditions.
“Avoid all avalanche terrain. Stay off of and out from slopes steeper than 30 degrees,” the advisory states. “Find safer riding conditions on slopes less than 30 degrees with no overhead hazard.”
While Utah experiences multiple avalanche incidents each winter, this is the first confirmed avalanche death in the state this season, according to the Utah Avalanche Center. Forecasters say conditions remain unstable across many backcountry zones, particularly where recent storms have added heavy loads onto an already fragile snowpack. Authorities continue to gather details about Wednesday’s incident, and additional updates are expected as investigators complete their assessment of the accident site.
