Two groups of in total seven alpinists were swept away by an avalanche beneath the Vertain peak, near the resort village of Sulden (Solda) in South Tyrol on Saturday, November 1. The two groups consisted of a group three, which was completely buried while the second group consisted of four of which two managed to escape the avalanche and alert authorities, while the other two were swept away. The three climbers from the first group, two men and a woman between the ages of 30-50, were found dead at the scene, while the two others from the second group could not be found before nightfall on Saturday.

The avalanche occurred around 3:50 p.m. in the Ortler massif, one of South Tyrol’s most iconic mountain ranges at an altitude of around 3,200 meters. The groups were going along a chute along the north face when the avalanche struck. Pictures from the Italian mountain rescue CNSAS show an icy chute which the two groups had traversed with ice picks and crampons. The father and daughter duo had apparently been carried into the lower part of the avalanche chute. Rescue operations were made particularly complicated by the weather, with the fog hampering search and rescue efforts.

Emergency services were quickly deployed after the alarm was raised. Volunteer firefighters and mountain rescue teams from Sulden responded alongside officers from the Guardia di Finanza Alpine Rescue in Schlanders, and rescue workers from nearby rescue stations. Two emergency helicopters, Pelikan 1 and Pelikan 3, assisted in the rescue and recovery efforts. Pelikan 1 retrieved the bodies of the three deceased and flew them to the nearby hospital, while Pelikan 3 continued operating at the avalanche site late into the evening. All victims have been identified as German nationals, two women and three men.

The area has seen recent snowfalls and strong winds, increasing the risk of windslab avalanches. CNSAS South Tyrol has advised climbers to exercise extreme caution when setting out into high alpine regions.
